Lay flat a shirt that fits you well, measure it the same way and compare — vintage sizing often differs from modern fits.

For a seventeen-year-old piece, the red has held up remarkably: no haze, no fading, no yellowing at the underarms. The green trim is crisp, the embroidered FPF crest is flawless, the EURO 2008 and RESPECT patches are intact, and the gold QUARESMA No.17 printing shows no cracking or lifting. One defect only, which I photograph rather than gloss over: a light diffuse mark on the front, just below the swoosh (photo 6). It only shows in raking light and in macro; at wearing distance it goes unnoticed. That is what explains the 9 rather than a 9.5.

• Legible Nike label (photo 4): reference 265759-611 and a complete barcode. That is the official reference for the Portugal 2008 home shirt — it can be verified independently
• EURO 2008 patch on one sleeve and the RESPECT band on the other: this is the tournament configuration, worn in Austria and Switzerland in the summer of 2008. A national shirt without those patches is simply the retail version — this one is the competition version
• Gold number on the front: that is the mandatory layout for international tournament matches, absent from club shirts. An immediate marker of an international competition kit
• High-density embroidered FPF crest (photo 3): the green Cross of Christ, the Portuguese shield and the five quinas must stay sharp under a loupe. It is a complex crest, and the first place copies fall apart
• Cross of Christ embroidered at the nape, in green thread on the collar: a detail reproductions almost systematically omit

📖 Quaresma, the trivela and the golden generation

A Portugal shirt with Euro 2008 patches and Ricardo Quaresma's name on the back: this is the heart of a generation football fans have not forgotten.

📅 Summer 2008 — the Euros in Austria and Switzerland. Scolari's Portugal topped their group before going out in the quarter-final to Germany. The patches on this shirt belong to that exact tournament.

👑 A golden squad. Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Nani, Simao, Pepe, Quaresma: Portugal in 2008 fielded one of the most technical attacking line-ups in Europe. A dressing room people still talk about.

⚽ The trivela, his signature. Quaresma is the player who popularised the outside-of-the-boot cross and shot — the "trivela". A move so identified with him it practically carries his name.

🎨 Red, green and gold — this 2008 Nike home remains one of the most elegant kits the Seleção have ever worn: deep red, bottle-green collar and side panels, gold printing and swoosh. A colour combination Portugal has never found again since.
