Vintage football shirts: the buying guide

A vintage football shirt is a real shirt released in its own era: Ronaldinho's Barça, Henry's France, OM in the Gignac years. At Pure Football Shirts, every piece is an authentic second-hand shirt, authenticated by hand at the Pure Atelier, then sold individually. No reissues, no copies: a single piece per reference and per size.

This page helps you choose the right classic shirt, in the right size and at a fair price, then shows you what's in stock today.

Vintage, retro, classic, second-hand: what do they mean?

The words get mixed up, so here's how we use them:

  • Vintage / classic: a shirt from the period, released in the season stated (1990s, 2000s, 2010s). This is the heart of our stock.
  • Second-hand: the shirt has already had an owner. Its condition is graded according to our condition guide.
  • Retro: careful, this word often means a recent reissue of an old design. A reissue is not a shirt from the period. Everything we sell is original, never reissued.

How to choose your vintage shirt

1. The club and the era

Start with what speaks to you: your club, your player, a legendary season. The most sought-after eras are the 2000s and the early 2010s. You can also browse by league: Ligue 1, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga.

2. The size

Cuts have changed a lot across eras and brands: a 2004 M doesn't fit like a 2024 M. Don't rely on the label alone. Take a shirt you already wear, measure it flat (armpit to armpit, then the length from shoulder to hem) and compare with the measurements on each product page. The size of each shirt is also written in its title, in brackets.

3. The condition

A classic shirt has lived a life. Each product page states its condition, according to our condition guide. Very good condition costs more; a small listed flaw can be a bargain if you want to wear it.

4. Authenticity

This is what matters most: the classic shirt market is full of fakes. Before going on sale, every shirt goes through authentication at the Pure Atelier: labels, product codes, crest, fabric and finishing. If you buy elsewhere, our guide to checking a shirt's authenticity gives you the method, and you can have a shirt certified by us.

How much does a vintage football shirt cost?
