Vintage Jersey Size Guide: How to never get it wrong again (Nike, Adidas, Kappa...)

Guide taille maillot football vintage mesure aisselle à aisselle

We've all been there. You finally unearth the Holy Grail: that 1997 Juventus jersey or that Zidane-era France national team jersey you've been dreaming of. You order it, eagerly open the package, put it on... and it's a disaster.

Either you're swimming in it (the "parachute" effect of the 90s), or you look like a vacuum-packed sausage (thanks, Kappa). The result: your collectible ends up on a hanger, never worn. Frustrating, isn't it?

At Pure Football Shirts, we know that buying vintage online can be daunting due to sizing. But good news: there's a logic behind it all. We'll explain how to choose the right size every time, decade by decade.

1. The Golden Rule: Forget the label, measure!

This is the first secret of collectors. A 1995 "L" has nothing to do with a 2024 "L". The neck label is an indication, not an absolute truth.

To avoid making mistakes again, you need to know your measurements. Take your favorite current jersey (the one that fits you perfectly), lay it flat on a table, and measure:

  • Width (Armpit to Armpit): This is the most important measurement (Pit-to-pit).
  • Length (Top of the collar to the bottom of the jersey): To know if it will fall well on the hips.

💡 Pure Football Shirts' Commitment:
We know it's a headache. That's why on each of our product pages, we provide exact measurements in centimeters. No more guesswork, just facts.

2. The 90s: The "Baggy" Era (Nike, Adidas, Umbro)

If you're looking for a jersey from our Vintage 90s collection, expect it to be wide. Very wide.

In the era of Oasis and Britpop, fashion was all about loose-fitting clothes. Sleeves often reached the elbows and collars were ample.

  • The Fit: Very wide cut ("Boxy fit").
  • Advice: If you like the retro/streetwear style typical of Bloke Core, take your usual size. If you want to wear it in a more "fitted" way like today, take one size down.
  • Example: An Adidas Equipment jersey (OM 93, France 98) in size L will often fit like a modern XL.

3. The 2000s: The Kappa shock and the transition

This is where it gets complicated. In the early 2000s, Kappa arrived with its Kombat technology (remember Italy at Euro 2000 or Totti's AS Roma, icons of Serie A of that era). It was a revolution in elastic jerseys.

  • The Kappa / Puma case (early 2000s): These run extremely small and tight. For a Kappa jersey from this era (often found in our 2000s collection), it is imperative to take 1 or even 2 sizes up from your usual size, unless you have the physique of a high-level athlete!
  • Nike (Total 90) & Adidas (Teamgeist): We start to see a return to more standard cuts, but still a little wider than today. An "M" starts to look like a true "M".

4. The 2010s to today: The "Slim Fit" Era

For recent jerseys (which you'll find in our New Arrivals), fashion has reversed. Brands like Puma, Nike, and Adidas favor athletic cuts.

  • The Fit: Close-fitting, tapered, shorter sleeves.
  • Advice: Take your usual size. If you're between sizes or prefer a looser fit, go for the larger size.

5. Pay attention to the version: Authentic vs Replica

Last pitfall to avoid: the jersey version. For several years, brands have been selling two types of jerseys:

  1. The Stadium version (Replica): This is the one traditionally sold to fans. Straight cut, comfortable. -> True to size.
  2. The Match version (Authentic / Vapor / Player Issue): This is exactly the jersey worn by players (Mbappé, Messi...). It is designed for performance, very light but above all very fitted. -> Runs small (take one size up).

(To become an expert on this technical subject, consult our detailed guide Authentic vs Replica).
