⚠️ Read this before buying

This XL is a genuine 2002 XL: 65 cm pit to pit. France shirts of that generation had a deliberately very roomy cut — mesh side panels, wide sleeves, dropped shoulders. This is not a distortion or a measuring error. If you normally wear a modern XL (54-56 cm), this one will be noticeably wider. Check the flat measurements before ordering.

📐 Flat measurements

Width (pit to pit) 65 cm
Length (shoulder to hem) 83 cm

65 x 83 cm is very generous in both directions. Lay flat a shirt that fits you well, measure it the same way and compare — vintage sizing differs from modern sizing, and this one more than most.

Condition

Perfect

For a shirt made in March 2002, the condition is remarkable. The royal blue hasn't turned: still deep, with no faded patch on the shoulders — the classic flaw on France shirts from that era, which often develop a lighter veil across the upper back. The honeycomb mesh is intact, no pilling, no snags. The embroidered rooster and star show no pulled threads, the tricolour shoulder stripes keep their three colours cleanly separated, and the V-neck has held its shape. The mesh side panels haven't yellowed.

Size XL — very roomy period cut (see measurements above)

100% AUTHENTIC

✦ Lifetime authenticity guarantee

Item checked by hand in my authentication workshop. If anything you buy from me is ever identified as a fake, I refund in full. No expiry date.

  • Inner label photographed (photo 5): reference 298742, factory code AKU001 and production date 03/02. March 2002 — the batch produced two months before the Korea-Japan World Cup
  • The rooster and star are embroidered, not printed: dense gold thread, clear relief to the touch, the star is a separate embroidery set above the rooster. Look at photo 4 — on fakes the gold is flat and the "F.F.F." box bleeds
  • The three shoulder stripes are three separate ribbons (white, blue, red), stitched onto the raglan sleeve rather than printed on it. They stop cleanly at the armhole seam
  • The mesh side panels are a second, separate knit, more open and slightly purple in transparency — visible in photo 2, under the sleeves. Reproductions almost never replicate this detail because it is expensive to manufacture
  • Real photos of the exact item for sale, never stock images — full method in my authentication guide

🛠️ Workshop note — Let's be precise about what is what. The shirt is authentic, dated March 2002 by its label. The ZIDANE 10 nameset is a premium reproduction I applied by hand: the shirt reached me blank. I say this every time, because it is the only honest way to sell this kind of piece — a nameset is never proof of authenticity, it is customisation. What authenticates this shirt is its label, its embroidery and its construction, not the name on the back. On the nameset itself I used the period typeface with the blue dot fill, the one the FFF used between 2002 and 2004 — not the solid version of later years.

📖 The last shirt of the class of 98

A single star above the rooster. That may be the detail that dates this shirt best: it belongs to the short window when France were reigning world champions and nobody doubted anything. What came next is another story — but that is also what makes this piece interesting.

🌍 2002 World Cup. France arrive in Japan as holders and leave after three matches without scoring a single goal. Zidane, injured in the thigh four days before the tournament, only plays the last game. This is the shirt of that collapse — and collectors know it perfectly well.

🏆 2003 Confederations Cup. A year later the same shirt lifts the trophy on home soil. Henry is named player of the tournament. A quiet revenge, but a real one.

🇫🇷 Zidane, Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player 2003. Between 2002 and 2004 he is at his peak with Real Madrid and wears this No.10 through to the Portuguese Euro, where Greece knock France out in the quarter-final.

👕 A design nobody makes any more — V-neck, number printed on the chest, mesh flanks, oversized cut. adidas doesn't draw shirts like this today, and that is exactly why people hunt for them.

🎯 Who is this shirt for?

← Scroll →

01

The Zidane fan

His No.10 in blue, from the years he was the best player in the world.

02

The France collector

One star above the rooster: the 1998-2018 window, and this model right in the middle of it.

03

The oversize wearer

65 cm wide: the 2000s cut, without having to size up twice.

04

The 2002 nostalgic

The shirt of a failed World Cup, made in March 2002. History counts even when it ends badly.

Not sure? My Mystery Box is a great alternative — just write "France" in the order notes.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does this XL really run large?

Yes, very. 65 cm pit to pit and 83 cm long: that is the deliberately roomy cut of early-2000s France shirts, with dropped shoulders and wide sleeves. A current adidas XL is closer to 55 cm. If you want a fitted look, this shirt won't suit; if you want the period look, this is exactly it.

Is the Zidane nameset original?

No, and I'd rather tell you straight. The shirt is authentic, dated March 2002 by its label. The ZIDANE 10 nameset is a premium reproduction I applied by hand in my workshop, using the period typeface and dotted fill. The shirt reached me blank. A nameset never proves a shirt's authenticity — the label, the embroidery and the construction do.

Why only one star above the rooster?

Because in 2002 France had won a single World Cup, in 1998. The second star only appeared after the 2018 title. It is an instant dating marker: any France shirt with one star predates July 2018.

How do you know it is the 2002 batch?

The inner label carries adidas reference 298742 and production date 03/02 — March 2002, two months before the World Cup. Photo 5 shows it close up and you can check the reference yourself. The design confirms it: this model was worn from 2002 through to Euro 2004.

Why is the number also on the front?

It is a signature of this model. Between 2002 and 2004 the FFF printed the player's number on the chest, under the adidas logo — common practice for national teams then, now gone from home shirts. Poor replicas often forget it or place it wrong.

What about shipping cost and delivery time?

Dispatched within 48 working hours with tracked Colissimo (€5.99 within mainland France, free over €100). International rates and delivery times are detailed in my shipping FAQ. Returns accepted within 14 days if unworn.
