Lay flat a shirt that fits you well, measure it the same way and compare — vintage sizing is often different from modern kits. 1990s Umbro shirts are long and straight-cut: 78 cm in length is normal for the era.

Thirty years old and holding up remarkably well. No holes, no stains, no snags. The royal blue is strong, the white panels haven't yellowed. The SHARP sponsor is solid and supple, with no cracking or lifting (close-up in photo 3). The embroidered crest on its black shield is flawless, with no pulled threads. There is very light general wear to the fabric, as on any worn 1990s piece — almost invisible to the eye, but that's what explains the 9 rather than a 10.

• Period Umbro neck label, blue satin with the double diamond and the size « L » woven underneath (photo 5) — the exact label format used by Umbro in the mid-1990s
• « Roll of Honour » fabric: the names of the players who made the club's history (Charlton, Best, Cantona, Giggs, Schmeichel, Keane, Stiles, Edwards…) are woven into the knit, not printed (photos 1, 2 and 4). That's the decisive checkpoint: no counterfeit reproduces this jacquard

📖 The shirt that carries the club's history in its fabric

This blue third is probably the most storied shirt in Manchester United's history. Umbro didn't simply design a third kit: the brand wove the names of everyone who had worn the shirt into the knit, and engraved the city's coat of arms at the centre alongside the date that changed everything for the club.

📅 29 May 1968, Wembley — Manchester United 4-1 Benfica. That's the « WEMBLEY 1968 » woven across the chest, below the coat of arms. That night, ten years after the Munich air disaster, United became the first English club to win the European Cup, with Bobby Charlton and George Best — two names you'll find in this shirt's fabric.

📅 « Concilio et Labore ». The motto on Manchester's coat of arms — « by wisdom and effort » — is woven into the centre of the shirt, beneath the city's ship and lions. A club shirt carrying a city's arms is rare; doing it this discreetly, as a watermark, is rarer still.

📅 1994-1995 — the season of near misses. United arrived off the back of a league and FA Cup double and set out to win everything again. The title slipped away on the final day, and the FA Cup final was lost. A frustrating season — but the one immediately before the Class of '92 broke through.

👑 Sharp — the Japanese sponsor stayed with Manchester United for nearly twenty years, until 2000. For a whole generation of supporters, the word SHARP in yellow lettering is Manchester United. It isn't coming back.
