9.5/10
Shirt condition
Excellent condition
The red is bright and even, the yellow collar and cuffs are unchanged and the mesh side panels are intact. The embroidered crest and the adidas logo are sharp, and the MORIENTES 9 printing on the back and the chest 9 are complete, with nothing missing. Wear is minimal: the only thing I found is a small pulled thread on the front (photo 6).

This S measures 50 x 74 cm: 2002 shirts run large, so it will also suit an M who likes a close fit. Compare with the flat measurements below, or check my size guide.
What you need to know
A small pulled thread on the front (photo 6), barely visible on the red. The fabric is neither holed nor snagged beyond that point, and there is nothing else to report on the whole shirt.

Workshop note — On adidas shirts from the 2002 World Cup, the small tag sewn near the side seam carries three lines: article code, factory reference and date. Here, 298547 and 02/02 match a production in early 2002, a few months before the tournament, and the mesh side panels are true to the model of the season.
Morientes and the 2002 Roja
Trained at Albacete, then at Zaragoza before Real Madrid signed him in 1997, Fernando Morientes won three Champions Leagues with the Merengues (1998, 2000, 2002). For Spain, he was José Antonio Camacho's first-choice centre-forward at the 2002 World Cup.
Spain won all three group games, against Slovenia (3-1), Paraguay (3-1, with a Morientes brace) and South Africa (3-2).
16 June 2002, Suwon. In the round of 16 against Ireland, Morientes headed the opener as early as the 8th minute. Ireland equalised from the penalty spot late on, and Spain went through on penalties.
The run ended in the quarter-final against co-hosts South Korea: 0-0 after extra time, two Spanish goals disallowed, then elimination on penalties. Morientes finished the tournament with three goals.
Frequently asked questions
Does the pulled thread show when worn?
You have to look for it up close (photo 6). Worn, it goes unnoticed on the red, and it won't get bigger as long as you don't pull on it.
What are the mesh panels on the sides for?
This is adidas ClimaCool ventilation, introduced on the 2002 World Cup shirts: open mesh under the arms and on the sides to release heat, designed for the Korean and Japanese summer.
How can I check the shirt is authentic?
Look at the small inner tag: code 298547 and date 02/02. Then check the fine embroidery of the crest and the open mesh on the sides.
How does this S fit?
On the large side: 50 cm pit to pit and 74 cm long. It will suit an S who likes the roomy 2000s fit, or an M who wants a fitted cut.
How much is shipping and how long does it take?
Shipped within 24-48 h with tracking: €5.99 in France, €9.99 to the EU, free from €99.99. You have 14 days to send the shirt back if it doesn't suit you. All the details in my shipping FAQ.
