Before diving into each era in detail, here's the one thing that makes Manchester United a club apart in world football: the No. 7. Here is the lineage of Old Trafford's legendary Sevens through the modern era of the club, as the club itself presents it: George Best (60s-70s, Ballon d'Or 1968), Bryan "Captain Marvel" Robson (1981-1994, iconic captain), Eric Cantona (1992-1997, "King Eric"), David Beckham (1996-2003, Class of '92), Cristiano Ronaldo (2003-2009 then 2021-2023, Ballon d'Or 2008), Edinson Cavani (2020-2021, a brief success), and today Mason Mount (since 2023). Era 1 — Golden Ferguson: The historic 1998-1999 Treble

26 May 1999. Camp Nou, Barcelona. Manchester United trail Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League final, Mario Basler having opened the scoring as early as the 6th minute. The minutes tick by. The 90th arrives. Bayern seem to have the trophy in hand. And then comes one of the most legendary turnarounds in football history: Teddy Sheringham equalizes in the 90+1st minute from a Beckham corner flicked on by Giggs. And 101 seconds later, from another Beckham corner met by Sheringham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scores the winner in the 90+3rd minute. United win 2-1. The club claims its 2nd European Cup since Sir Matt Busby in 1968.

But what makes this season truly unique is that United had already won the Premier League and the FA Cup before heading to Barcelona. The club becomes the first English club in history to complete the Treble (Premier League + FA Cup + Champions League) — a feat only matched once more in Premier League history, by Manchester City in 2022-2023. The red Umbro 1998-1999 home shirt printed with Beckham No. 7 — Cantona had left the club in May 1997, so the No. 7 passed temporarily to Beckham for the Treble season. Schmeichel captained the side in his final match. Solskjaer wore No. 20. Sheringham wore No. 10. All of those printings have become global collector grails.

Era 2 — Beckham → Ronaldo: The Legendary Sevens (2002-2009)

Summer 2002. Manchester United enters a new era with Nike as official kit supplier (the Umbro deal has ended). It's also David Beckham's last season before his sensational move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2003. The 2002-2003 season is brilliant: United win an 8th Premier League title under Ferguson, and Beckham delivers one final iconic performance as No. 7, by then the signature number of the Class of '92. Open conflict with Ferguson in early 2003 (the infamous flying boot incident in the dressing room after a defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup). He leaves for Madrid in July 2003 for 35 million euros — a record fee at the time for an attacking midfielder.

August 2003. Manchester United sign an 18-year-old Portuguese winger from Sporting CP for 19 million euros. Cristiano Ronaldo asks for No. 28 (his number in Lisbon). Ferguson refuses and hands him No. 7 — the number of Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham. A crushing responsibility for a teenager. The transformation would become one of the greatest success stories in football history. Six seasons in Manchester. 3 Premier League titles (2007, 2008, 2009). Era 3 — Final Ferguson: The 20th title 2009-2013

Summer 2009. Cristiano Ronaldo leaves for Real Madrid for 94 million euros, a world record at the time. United enters a period of transition. But Ferguson remains at the helm and keeps winning. These last four seasons under the legendary Scottish manager are marked by a drive to finish the job: 2 Premier League titles (2010-11 and 2012-13), a 2011 Champions League final lost at Wembley to Guardiola's Barcelona (1-3), and the consolidation of a historic trophy haul.

2010-2011 season: 19th Premier League title, overtaking Liverpool in the race for English titles (United passed Liverpool's 18 titles, a major symbolic milestone). Rio Ferdinand starts at the heart of defense (regular captain post-Vidic) alongside partner Nemanja Vidic, one of the most dominant central defensive pairings of the Premier League era. The Champions League final is lost to Barcelona at Wembley despite a hard-fought run to get there.

2012-2013 season: historic 20th Premier League title. Ferguson stuns English football by prising Robin Van Persie away from Arsenal for 24 million euros in the summer of 2012. The Dutchman scores 26 Premier League goals, including a decisive hat-trick on 22 April 2013 against Aston Villa that clinches the title with 4 games to spare (final margin: 11 points over Manchester City). On 8 May 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson announces his retirement after 27 years at the helm of the club and 13 Premier League titles. His final match at Old Trafford on 12 May against Swansea (2-1 win) remains one of the most emotional moments in modern football.

Era 4 — Mourinho: Europa League 2017

The post-Ferguson years are complicated. David Moyes, appointed in 2013, lasts less than a season (sacked in April 2014). Louis Van Gaal arrives in 2014 and stays two seasons but fails to convince. In 2016, the club calls on Jose Mourinho to restore some trophy-winning momentum. An immediate statement signing: Mourinho brings Paul Pogba back from Juventus for 105 million euros (a world record at the time) and signs a free-agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

2016-2017 season: United win the League Cup + Europa League + Community Shield. First European trophy since 2008. Ibrahimovic delivers 28 goals across all competitions at age 35 before a serious cruciate ligament injury in April 2017. 2017-2018 season: United finish 2nd in the Premier League (still the best post-Ferguson finish to this day), FA Cup semi-finalists. But Mourinho is sacked in December 2018 after a run of defeats.

2026 value: 120-260 € for a Manchester United Adidas 2016-2018 shirt printed with Ibrahimovic No. 9/10/11 or Pogba No. 6 (from when Pogba wore No. 6 before switching back to No. 10), 180-350 € for pieces with Europa League patches. Era 5 — Solskjaer: The Pogba return (2018-2021)

December 2018. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, hero of the 1999 Treble, returns to Manchester United as interim manager after Mourinho's sacking. He delivers immediate results (a classic new-manager bounce) and is confirmed in March 2019. The Solskjaer era lasts three seasons. The club reaches an FA Cup semi-final in 2018-2019 and returns to the Champions League. Pogba reclaims the No. 6 he wore at Juventus (No. 10 being taken by Rashford). 2018-2019 FA Cup season: Pogba enjoys his best seasons with United (16 goals, 11 assists).

2020-2021 season: United finish 2nd in the Premier League (a second post-Ferguson runner-up finish), reach the 2021 Europa League final (lost on penalties to Villarreal). Solskjaer is sacked in November 2021 after a run of defeats. Cristiano Ronaldo's return in August 2021 (CR7 generously reclaims Cavani's No. 7) isn't enough to turn things around.

Era 6 — Ten Hag → Amorim → Carrick: The rebuild (2022-2026)

Erik ten Hag arrives in May 2022 from Ajax. 2022-2023 season: League Cup + 3rd in the Premier League. 2023-2024 season: 8th in the Premier League (the worst Premier League finish up to that point), but an FA Cup win over Manchester City. But 2024-2025 goes badly wrong: Ten Hag is sacked in October 2024. Ruben Amorim, a young Portuguese coach from Sporting CP, is appointed in November 2024.

2024-2025 season under Amorim: 15th in the Premier League (the worst finish since 1989-1990), Europa League final lost to Tottenham in Bilbao. No European football for the first time since 2014-2015. The 2025-2026 season starts painfully: Amorim is sacked in January 2026 after just 14 months in the job, with the lowest win percentage of any permanent manager in the Premier League era. Michael Carrick, a former United midfielder, is appointed head coach for the rest of the season after a brief spell under caretaker Darren Fletcher. He delivers a positive turnaround: United regain some hope, beat Liverpool in May 2026, and secure qualification for the 2026-27 Champions League.

On the pitch, two young players are emerging: Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast, an explosive winger), Alejandro Garnacho (Argentina, a young talent), alongside Bruno Fernandes (captain), Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha (summer 2025 signings).

2026 value: 80-180 € for a standard-print Manchester United Adidas 2022-2026 shirt, 120-250 € for pieces from the 2025 Europa League final or with special patches. 2024-2025 shirts printed with Amad Diallo, Garnacho or Bruno Fernandes are starting to become collector items — the first Europa League season since the Mourinho era.

How to authenticate a Manchester United shirt: the 4 critical checkpoints

The Manchester United shirt is one of the most counterfeited in the world, in the top 5 across all categories alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich. Here are the 4 checkpoints I systematically verify before adding an MU piece to my stock.

1. The print typography for each era. Every MU era has its own official typography: yellow or red Premier League lettering depending on the season, special FA Cup or League Cup typography for finals, white bordered Champions League typography for European cup competitions, Europa League typography for the secondary European stage. 2. Kit supplier transitions. Three kit suppliers in the club's recent history: Umbro (until 2002), Nike (2002-2015), Adidas (since 2015). A 2003-04 piece badged Umbro is necessarily a fake (Nike had taken over the contract). Always check the brand on the crest against the claimed season. 3. The number worn by player and season. A common error on counterfeits: a 1998-99 Beckham shirt printed No. 7 (Beckham wore No. 10 that season — No. 7 only went to him after Cantona's retirement in 1997, and even then it was a gradual switch from No. 10 to No. 7). Or a 2003-04 CR7 shirt with No. 28 (Ferguson gave him No. 7 from the moment he arrived).
