How to Wash a Vintage Football Jersey Without Damaging It: The Expert Guide

Vintage AC Milan football shirt drying on a clothesline for optimal care

You've just invested in a gem from our vintage shirt collection. You wear it proudly... and then comes the fateful moment: it needs to be washed.

We all have that anxiety: opening the machine and finding the sponsor in pieces at the bottom of the drum, or the precious flocking half-peeled off. A nightmare.

At Pure Football Shirts, restoration is an integral part of our expertise process. We prepare hundreds of shirts every year. Here are our 5 golden rules to keep yours looking like new.

Rule #1: Heat is your enemy (30°C Max!)

This is the most important rule. The adhesive used for flocking and heat-sealed sponsors cannot withstand intense heat.

  • The classic mistake: Washing at 40°C or 60°C. This is guaranteed death for the flocking.
  • The solution: Always wash in COLD water (20°C) or a maximum of 30°C. Select the "Delicate" or "Synthetics" cycle.

Rule #2: Wash shirts inside out

Imagine your shirt spinning 1000 times in the drum. It rubs against the metal and buttons of other clothes. To protect logos and avoid damaging a rare official flocking, always turn your shirt inside out before putting it in the machine.

Rule #3: Ban fabric softener and tumble drying

Two products are absolutely forbidden:

  1. Fabric softener: It contains chemical agents that can attack the adhesive of sponsors.
  2. Tumble dryer: This is the graveyard of football shirts. The heat is too intense. Always dry your shirts in the open air, on a clothesline.

Rule #4: The special case of "Ultra-Vintage" shirts (Before 2000)

Do you have a collector's item from the 80s or 90s with a thick felt sponsor in your hands?

Take no chances: hand washing is mandatory.

Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a little gentle detergent, let it soak for 10 minutes, gently rub dirty areas (armpits, collar), rinse, and wring by simply pressing the fabric.

Expert Bonus: How to re-glue a peeling flock?

This is the tip that will save your old shirts (we even used it to save this Valbuena OM shirt). If you see a corner of the sponsor starting to lift, here's the method:

Technique for re-gluing an OM football shirt flock with an iron and parchment paper
  1. Lay the shirt flat on an ironing board.
  2. Place a sheet of parchment paper (baking paper) over the damaged flocking. NEVER put a hot iron directly on the plastic!
  3. Set your iron to medium heat (without steam).
  4. Press the tip of the iron onto the parchment paper (at the peeling area) for 5 to 10 seconds.
  5. Let it cool before removing the paper. The heat has reactivated the adhesive!
