📖 EURO 2008: the Netherlands tear apart the group of death

In the summer of 2008 the Netherlands were drawn into a group instantly nicknamed « the group of death »: reigning world champions Italy, 2006 World Cup finalists France, and Romania. Nobody had them going through. They won all three matches and produced one of the most memorable group stages in the tournament's history. This shirt belongs to that campaign.

📅 9 June 2008, Bern — Netherlands 3-0 Italy. The reigning world champions swept aside in the opening game. A result that echoed across Europe and launched the Oranje's tournament.

📅 13 June 2008, Bern — Netherlands 4-1 France. Four days later France met the same fate. Arjen Robben scored the third goal on a textbook counter-attack. The Netherlands topped the group with nine points from nine.

📅 21 June 2008 — the derailment. After three emphatic wins, the run ended in the quarter-final against Guus Hiddink's Russia (1-3 after extra time). The contrast between that group stage and this exit remains one of Dutch football's great frustrations.

👑 Arjen Robben, No.11 — the most recognisable dribbler of his generation: cutting inside onto his left foot from the right wing, everyone knew it was coming, nobody stopped it. In 2008 he was at Real Madrid; a year later he joined Bayern Munich, where he became a legend. He was the Oranje No.11 for more than a decade.
