Darwin Núñez, Benfica's gamble

In summer 2020, Benfica brought Jorge Jesus back to the bench and signed a 21-year-old Uruguayan striker still unknown to the wider public, coming off a season in the Spanish second division.

September 2020: Darwin Núñez arrives from Almería in what was then the most expensive transfer in the club's history.

His first season in Lisbon is a learning year, and Benfica finish third in the league. What followed proved the club right.

2021-2022: Darwin finishes as the Portuguese league's top scorer with 26 goals, then joins Liverpool in summer 2022.
