The white is still white, with no yellowing at the collar or under the arms. The red and black sash is sharp, the embroidered three-star crest is intact and the Etihad sponsor is complete. The TOURE YAYA 42 lettering and the sleeve badges lie perfectly flat. No flaws to report.

Key facts about this piece
This third shirt came out for the 2009-2010 season. Yaya Touré only joined City in summer 2010: the TOURE YAYA 42 lettering was applied in my workshop and does not match a shirt worn by the player that season.

Embroidered crest: eagle, three stars and the « Superbia in Proelio » motto, dense and even stitching (photo 3)

Cut and finish: white round collar, sash sewn diagonally from shoulder to hip, even knit
Workshop note — On City Umbro shirts from this period, the « Official Product » label carries a serial number printed in red. I check how even the digits are and the quality of the label weave.
City’s red and black sash
In 2009, Etihad Airways became Manchester City’s shirt sponsor, a year after Abu Dhabi United Group bought the club. Umbro then designed this white third shirt crossed by a red and black sash.
The red and black recall the striped away shirt City wore when they won the 1969 FA Cup final against Leicester.
July 2010: Yaya Touré left FC Barcelona for Manchester City and took the number 42.
In his first season, he scored the only goal of the 2011 FA Cup final against Stoke, the club’s first major trophy since 1976.
No. This third shirt dates from 2009-2010 and Yaya Touré arrived in summer 2010. The TOURE YAYA 42 lettering was applied in my workshop: it is a supporter shirt, not a match-worn piece.
Why « TOURE YAYA » and not « YAYA TOURE »?
It is how his name appeared on his back at City, surname first, to tell him apart from his brother Kolo Touré, who was in the same squad.
How can I check the shirt is authentic?
Look at the « Official Product » label and its red number, then the embroidery of the crest and the Umbro diamond. These are the first points I check.
How does this XL fit?
It measures 61 cm pit to pit and 76 cm in length. It is wide and rather short: if you wear a regular XL, it will fit you well.
