Workshop note — Reebok supplied City's kits from 2003. I check the reference printed under the composition and the quality of the embroidered Reebok logo on the chest, two details rarely done well on unofficial pieces.
Anelka and City's new stadium
In summer 2003, Manchester City left Maine Road for the City of Manchester Stadium, built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Reebok became the club's kit supplier and brought back red and black stripes for the away shirt, a nod to the 1969 FA Cup final kit.
Nicolas Anelka had arrived from PSG a year earlier, signed by Kevin Keegan. He chose the number 39, which he kept throughout his time at City.
4 February 2004, White Hart Lane: 3-0 down at half-time and reduced to ten men, City beat Tottenham 4-3 in the FA Cup. One of the craziest games in the club's history.
The same season, City played in the UEFA Cup, qualifying through the fair play ranking. Anelka remained the Citizens' main attacking threat.
Frequently asked questions
Why did Anelka wear number 39?
He picked it when he joined City in 2002 and kept it until he left in 2005. The 39 became his trademark in the Premier League, and he wore it again later at Chelsea.
What is the First Advice sponsor?
First Advice, a financial advice company, was City's shirt sponsor in the early 2000s. It helps date shirts from that period precisely.
How can I check the shirt is authentic?
Look at the Reebok label and its 249/233939/03 reference, the “Official Fan version Merchandise” neck label and the crest embroidery. These are the first things I check.
How does this XL fit?
It measures 57 cm pit to pit and 76 cm in length. It is a straight, comfortable XL: if you wear a regular XL, it will fit you well.
How much is shipping and how long does it take?
Shipped within 24-48 h with tracking: €5.99 in France, €9.99 to the EU, free from €99.99. You have 14 days to return the shirt if it doesn't suit you. All the details in my shipping FAQ.
